Stop Me Before I Give Up!

Once upon a time, my goal in life was to weigh 100 lbs.  It seemed no matter what I did, I couldn't get above 97 lbs!  Of course, this was years decades ago.  I also used to say I wasn't going to worry about how big my rear was--but lately it's creeping around my sides and saying hello from my hips.  I'll be the first to admit that I have no will power.  I joke that I have plenty of will power--it's won't power that I have trouble with.  There was a time when I could--and did--eat anything I wanted and not gain weight.  Then came the time when I could still eat pretty much whatever I wanted--as long as I exercised, too.  Now it seems that no matter what I do--or don't do--I gain weight.  Since Christmas, I've gained at least 10 lbs.

In an effort to fight the good fight, I started walking this week with a couple of friends.  Monday we did about 2.5 miles.  Wednesday and Friday we upped it to 3 miles.  Tuesday I did Dr. Oz's workout, as well as Jillian Michaels' Shred.  Haven't lost anything, in fact I've gained!  Let's dissect yesterday.  Walked 3 miles.  Had a smoothie for breakfast and some BBQed Chicken Chunks from Walmart for lunch.  Met friends for dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant where I had way too many tortilla chips and salsa.  My entree was a chicken burrito.  I did eat some of my rice, but none of the refried beans (I think they look like leftovers from other customers' plates).  About 8:30 I had a banana.  This morning I was up 1.5 lbs!  Guess I'm going to have to stay away from the Mexican place.

Seriously, what I need is a personal trainer.  More like a live in Jillian Michaels.  Someone to slap the Girl Scout cookies and jelly beans from my hand.  Someone to make sure I eat more fruits and veggies.  Someone to stand over me while I work out.  Am I lazy or just old?  Probably a bit of both!

Actually, I just have to want it more than I do right now.  About 10 years ago, I lost 20 lbs on the Atkins diet.  At that time, I could talk myself out of the Milky Ways staring me in the face at the checkout line.  I wanted to be thin more than I wanted the momentary satisfaction of the chocolate.  Right now, that's not the case.

I think if you lost 100 lbs., there would be nothing left of you!

Manda! I don't want to lose 100 lbs! Only about 15!

Beverly, you do realise that when you start exercising your muscles improve and become stronger. Muscles weigh more too. You might not be losing the weight you would like but I think you might be losing inches instead. Perhaps you should get the tape measure out.

There is a commercial on the radio that says, "A woman in her 50's has to work out an hour a day in the gym JUST to maintain her weight", Yepee for us.
You are lucky you only have 15 pounds to lose, I have WAY MORE than that to lose and I just keep packing on more. NOT FUN!!!
Keep up the walking, I am proud of you.

I know you don't want to hear about his from me...but...In my experience, weighing yourself and measuring yourself just makes you guilty and makes you set unreasonable (if not impossible) goals. If you just exercise every day, then eat what your body wants, it makes you feel a lot better than a tape measure can. And I have also found, the more you eat healthy and try to listen to what your body (not your brain) wants, the more you just plain want healthy things.

Last thought, if you start the day eating doughnuts, cinnamon toast crunch, or a cupcake, you don't want to exercise or do much of anything. But if you eat something a little more healthy, your body will want to exercise a lot more and then you decide what your body wants to refuel itself.

And my other thought, for at least the past two years I've had the goal of losing five pounds. However, I don't have a scale and never weigh myself. So I have absolutely no idea if I've lost five pounds. It's nice to pretend that I did though!

Girl, I am right there with you! It had gotten completely out of hand for me. I lost 83 pounds but have put a good bit of it back on. Finally, on Saturday morning- last week- I decided to STOP and started the Atkins plan just to see if I could do it. It is working pretty well, I'm already down 8 pounds. Most of my problems are with sugar and carbs---I love them! But it just has to stop. Had I kept up my last effort, I would have been done and just enjoying life. But you are so right- until we make up our minds, it just won't work.

Here are a couple of thoughts;
1. You may be gaining muscle.
2. With the Mexican food, it may have made you retain water.

Those are just a couple of thoughts!

I hear you! There was a time when I was tiny and I loved it! But I was always hungry, being thin isn't easy for me at all! I am determined to lose about 50lbs by my 45th birthday so maybe we can help to keep each other motivated! I go to TOPS every week and the accountability does help, I have lost about 30 lbs. so far, so there is a start. I have faith in you the 15 lbs will drop, so keep it up!

Preach on, Sistah - I' m totally with you.
It really sucks that our metabolism slows with each year, but not so for our appetite! Boo Hoo!

with the kiddos grown and gone your lifestyle has slowed, so those easy to burn calories aren't so readily burning anymore. i hear ya loud and clear though! until you are mentally ready and wanting it bad enough, it just won't happen. i am in the same boat right now and i just want the cake and cookies more for the time being. i know it will pass though and i will get tired of it. in the meantime, i am still enjoying my workouts AND my cake. :) definitely truth to what erika is saying....the days i start out with cookies for breakfast, that is what i desire the remainder of the day. i 2nd the mexican food too....all that salt and water retention. when you work out, do you eat a lot more? i get hungrier and have to be careful what i eat right after working out...burning more calories doesn't entitle to eating more, lol, i tell myself that! so, your options, kick up the calorie burning or cut back on the calorie intake! it all comes down to calories. good luck!

To say that this post is spot on for me!! I would just like to lose 5lbs, but I've lost and regained the same 3lbs about 5 times in the last year!
I'm there with you on the chocolate and desire to lose weight dilemma!
My current thing is to not eat after 7pm, but I've broken it so many times, hence the loss/gain thing!

Just remember, muscle weighs more than fat!!!

I understand how you feel. I use to be able to eat anything and not gain a pound now I look at food and weigh more. Trying counting calories. Oh and the rear end part sorry to say but we are Hesters and all of us girls seem to be blessed in that department!!!
